Cards Score Early and Often in 10-2 Win at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – The University of Louisville softball team tallied a season-high 15 hits and 10 runs en route to a 10-2 win over host Georgia Tech Saturday evening at Mewborn Field. With the win, the Cards improve to 15-16 (9-11 ACC) on the season while the Yellow Jackets drop to 11-20 (5-16).

The teams will meet in the series finale Sunday at 12 p.m.

In a game in which the Cardinals scored in every inning, Carmyn Greenwood tied her career-high with four hits and scored a pair of runs, driving in two and adding a stolen base while Cassady Greenwood went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base to help lead the Cardinals at the plate. Additionally, Makayla Hurst went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBIs.

Jennifer Leonhardt (3-5) picked up the win after surrendering one earned run on two hits and striking out one in 3.2 innings of relief.

The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Carmyn Greenwood connected on the first pitch she saw for a leadoff single and proceeded to steal second, moving into scoring position for Makayla Hurst's RBI single.

The Yellow Jackets quickly answered in the home half of the inning with a leadoff home run by Breanna Roper.

Louisville struck again in the second when Maddy Newman beat the throw for an infield single. A walk issued to Sydney Bickel put two on for Carmyn Greenwood's RBI hit to left field, putting the Cards on top 2-1.

The Cardinals' offense continued with two runs in the third. Roby got the frame started with a single Hurst followed with a shot over the fence in right centerfield. The junior's sixth homer of the season put Louisville on top 4-1.

In fourth, Louisville increased the lead to 5-1 when Celene Funke reached on an error, stole second and back-to-back walks issued to Roby and Jennifer Leonhardt loaded the bases for Charley Butler's infield single.

Louisville used four hits, including doubles by Cassady Greenwood and Funke, to put up a three-spot in the fifth. Cassady Greenwood got the ram started with a double and scored on a hit by Newman. Sydney Bickel's sacrifice bunt moved Newman to second and Carmyn Greenwood's single put two on for Funke, who laced a two-run double down the right field line.

In the sixth, Butler reached on an error, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on an infield hit by Cassady Greenwood. Carmyn Greenwood's sent her sister home with an RBI single to increase the lead to 10-1.

Bailee Zeitler added a run for the Yellow Jackets with a solo home run in the sixth, bringing the final score to 10-2.

Newman finished the game with a 2-for-4, two run performance at the plate while Funke produced two RBIs and added a stolen base, extending her career total to 68 and moving into a tie for second with Sidney Melton on Louisville's all-time stolen base list.
Madison McPherson (2-7) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of work. Roper went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
