March 09, 2021 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team used 10 hits including home runs by Makayla Hurst and Carmyn Greenwood to beat Bellarmine 8-1 Tuesday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
The Cardinals (7-7) will return to action this weekend when they play host to Western Kentucky and Valparaiso in the Red & Black Challenge Saturday and Sunday.
Â
Carmyn Greenwood had a home run and a triple with two RBIs while Jordyn Wolfe registered a triple drove in two runs to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Maddy Newman tallied two hits and scored twice while Taryn Weddle drove in a pair of runs as Louisville outhit the Knights 10-6, with four of those hits falling in for extra bases.
Â
"I was pretty pleased with our pitching and defense tonight and I think at the plate we did a much better job of swinging at the pitches we could drive," said UofL head coach Holly Aprile. "We definitely drove the ball to the wall a few times. We also scored on some good hustle plays. They were playing us pretty deep, so we took advantage of that."
Â
Taylor Roby (4-3) picked up the win, holding Bellarmine scoreless on four this and striking out four in 4.0 innings. Jennifer Leonhardt allowed one run and scattered two hits while striking out six in 3.0 innings as she earned her second save of the season.
Â
"I think Roby could be a little bit sharper, we talked about some of the leadoff walks and where we are with our first pitch strikes, but overall a good job from her," said Aprile. "After giving up two quick hits in a row, Jennifer really found the zone and got them to swing out of the zone – I thought she did a really nice job as well."
Â
The teams played through two and a half scoreless innings before Louisville took a 1-0 lead courtesy of Hurst's solo blast over the centerfield fence – her first homer as a Cardinal.
Â
Louisville put up a three-spot in the third when Maddy Newman led off with a hit and moved to second on Celene Funke's sacrifice bunt and Carmyn Greenwood followed with her first home run of the season. Jordyn Wolfe tripled and crossed the plate on a wild pitch, extending the Cardinals' lead to 4-0.
Â
The offense continued in the fourth when Weddle walked and Newman beat the throw on an infield single to put two on for Wolfe's two-run hit, making the score 6-0.
Â
Bellarmine (4-8) got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Grace Werner delivered a leadoff single, took second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Hannah Webb.
Â
UofL got the run back and added another behind Weddle's two-run single in the sixth. Leonhardt led off the home half of the frame with a hit and Cassady Greenwood was hit by a pitch to put runners on for the freshman.
Â
Carson Goatley (2-3) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits and striking out two in 2.1 innings. Webb and Carley Ziegler each had two hits to lead the Knights at the plate.
