Louisville shines in relays
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Louisville women's team reached the podium twice this evening on Day 2 at the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Â
The start of the meet was delayed by 30 minutes due to a tornado warning in the Greensboro area, but that did not stop the Cardinals, who moved into 11th place powered by strong swims from the underclasswomen.
Â
The 200 Free Relay team of freshman Gabi Albiero (22.13), sophomore Christiana Regenauer (21.77), freshman Tristen Ulett (22.14) and junior Alena Kraus (22.12) put together a 1:28.16 to  finish eighth in the timed final. California won the event with a 1:25.78 just edging Virginia's time of 1:25.97.
Â
Abby Hay won the consol finals of the 200 IM, cutting a half second off her prelim time to turn in a 1:56.02 and earn HM All-American honors.  Virginia's Alex Walsh posted the winning time of 1:51.87.
Â
Gabi Albiero earned HM All-American honors with a 22.27 in the consol finals of the 50 freestyle. Â Virginia's Kate Walsh took top honors with a 21.13
Â
The 400 Medley Relay team of Tristen Ulett (52.39), Kaylee Wheeler (58.15), Gabi Albiero (51.44) and Christiana Regenauer shaved 2.24 seconds off their qualifying time to go 3:29.15 and finish sixth in the timed final. NC State took home the title, setting a new NCAA and U.S. Open record of 3:24.59.
Â
"We had serious improvement by Tristen, Kaylee and Christiana. Gabi did a great job with her third swim of the night. It was a really good relay," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach.
Â
Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET with prelims in the 400-yard Individual Medley, 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke, 3M diving and 200-yard Medley Relay.
