February 27, 2021 | Softball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Louisville softball team took an early lead, but a five-run fourth inning keyed host No. 6/5 Florida to a 5-1 win on Saturday.
Â
Louisville (3-5) and Florida (10-0) will complete the two-game series Sunday at 10 a.m.
Â
After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. Junior Rebecca Chung's connected on her first career triple, a blast that caromed off of the left field fence for Louisville's first hit of the game. Junior Charley Butler entered to run and crossed the plate on redshirt senior Carmyn Greenwood's single to right field.
Â
The lead did not last long as the Gators countered with four runs in the home half of the fourth. A leadoff walk put Julia Cotrrill on and back-to-back hits by Avery Goelz and Jaimie Hoover loaded the bases for Bryn Thomas, who drew a walk to plate Cottrill to even the score at 1-1. Cheyenne Lindsay's two-run double put the Gators on top 3-1. A sacrifice fly and a double steal gave Florida a 5-1 lead. Â Â Â Â
Â
Redshirt junior Taylor Roby (1-3) took the loss after giving up five earned runs on seven hits and striking out three in 3.1 innings. Jennifer Leonhardt tossed 2.2 innings of relief and did not give up a hit or a run.
Â
Louisville had an early scoring opportunity in the first when Taryn Weddle earned a two-out walk, Rebecca Chung was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but a groundout ended the threat.
Â
Elizabeth Hightower (4-0) got the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out five in 7.0 innings. Hannah Adams, Avery Goelz and Jaimie Hoover each had two hits and Lindsey collected two RBI to lead Florida at the plate.
