Cardinals Defeat Virginia Behind Roby's One-Hit Shutout
February 21, 2021 | Softball
RALEIGH, N.C. – Redshirt junior Taylor Roby tossed a complete game one-hit shutout to help the University of Louisville softball team to a 4-0 win against Virginia on Sunday at NC State's Dail Park on the final day of the ACC Pod Weekend.
Â
The Cardinals (3-4, 3-2 ACC) will return to action next weekend when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on No. 6/5 Florida in a two-game series.
Â
One day after a pair of back-to-back walk-off wins, the Cardinals picked up their third straight victory without the late-inning drama as Roby delivered a masterful performance in the circle and her team backed her with solid defense while scoring four runs.
Â
Roby (1-2) retired the first eight batters she faced before surrendering a two-out single in the third. A walk and subsequent fielder's choice allowed the Cavaliers' only baserunners in the game, none moved into scoring position. She registered three strikeouts in the contest.
UofL jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Carmyn Greenwood led off the game with a walk, stole second, took third on an error and scored on Roby's groundout.
Â
The Cardinals added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning. Senior Maddy Newman singled and took second on an error. A pinch-hit single by junior Rebecca Chung plated Newman. Freshman Sydney Bickel re-entered the game to run for Chung and took second on Carmyn Greenwood's sacrifice bunt. Senior Celene Funke followed with an infield hit to score Bickel, extending the lead to 3-0.
Â
Junior Cassady Greenwood completed the scoring when she led off the top of the sixth with a solo shot over the right field fence. Her first home run of the season, bringing the score to 4-0.
Â
The Cardinals got hits from six different players while Funke, Roby, Cassady Greenwood and Chung collected RBIs.
Â
Clare Zureich ((0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and striking out seven in 4.2 innings. Bailey Winscott accounted for Virginia's only hit as the Cavaliers drop to 2-4 (1-3 ACC).
The Cardinals finished their ACC-opening weekend with a 3-2 record, winning three straight after dropping the first two games to host NC State.
Â
"We finished out the weekend strong with a dominating performance by Taylor Roby on the mound and some stellar defense that backed her up," said UofL head coach Holly Aprile. "I was pleased with our offensive adjustments as we got deeper into the weekend as well. NC State is a tough team at the plate and on the mound and we need to learn from those losses and use them to propel us to better performances down the road. Florida will provide us with a great opportunity to show our toughness and fight as a team."
