February 20, 2021 | Softball
DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt junior Taylor Roby's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the University of Louisville softball team to a 5-4 win against Virginia Saturday on day two of the ACC Pod Weekend. UofL (1-4, 1-2 ACC) will take on NC State in their second game of the day at 3 p.m.
Â
With the Cardinals trailing 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the seventh, redshirt senior Carmyn Greenwood was hit by a pitch and junior Charley Butler followed with a single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to set up Roby, who sent a two-run single to centerfield to give the Cardinals their first win of the season.
Â
Roby, who had blasted a two-run homer earlier in the game, led Louisville with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and collected four RBIs. Charley Butler went 2-for-4 with two runs. Freshman Gabby Holloway (1-1) got the win after retiring all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
Â
In back-and-forth game, the teams played through two innings before Virginia (1-3, 0-2) broke through with a run in the third. Donna Friedman doubled to start the frame and was lifted for pinch runner Abigail Barber. Two outs later, Ashley Jennings singled her home.
Â
Louisville answered in the bottom of the fourth when Roby led off with hit and was lifted for sophomore Jenna Servi who took second on freshman Taryn Weddle's sacrifice bunt. Junior Rebecca Chung's single placed runners on the corners and an error sent Servi home to even the score at 1-1.
Â
UVA countered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Jennings walked and scored on a double by Kate Covington and an RBI single by Arizona Ritchie gave the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead.
Â
Undaunted, the Cardinals came back to tie the game again in the home half of the fifth. Butler delivered a two-out single and Roby followed with her team-best third home run of the season, a towering shot over the right field fence to make the score 3-3.
Â
The Cavaliers regained the lead in the sixth behind Friedman's RBI double which put UVA back on top 4-3.
Â
Holloway entered to pitch in the top of the seventh and held the Cavaliers in check.
Â
Madison Harris (1-3) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on two hits in 1.1 innings.
