
Louisville Opens Season against No. 8 Florida on Saturday

The Cardinals and Gators will square off at 11:30 a.m. ET.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse opens the 2021 campaign when they host No. 8 Florida on Saturday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. ET. The game will broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

Last season, the Cardinals went 5-4 before the season was shortened due to the pandemic.

Louisville is 10-3 all-time in season openers and has won four of the last five. They won four straight prior to losing 21-11 at No. 7 Northwestern on Feb. 8, 2019. Last season, Louisville won 16-11 at Cincinnati on Feb. 9, 2020 in its season opener.

Louisville is 11-2 in home openers and its seven-game winning streak came to a close with a 15-6 loss to Denver last season. The only other defeat in a home opener was a 16-7 loss to No. 1 Northwestern on March 7, 2012.

In 2020, UofL had two seniors after having just one in 2019. This year, they enter the season with eight seniors, five of which are team captains. Seven of the eight seniors have been with head coach Scott Teeter all four seasons at Louisville. Florek came to Louisville from Towson in 2019.

UofL's roster features eight seniors, four juniors, 16 sophomore and 11 freshmen.

Last season, UofL went 5-0 against unranked teams and 0-4 against ranked teams. In 2019, they went 5-4 against unranked teams and 0-9 against ranked teams. UofL has lost 23 straight games against ranked teams. Their last win over a ranked team was a 9-8 victory vs. No. 7 Syracuse on April 22, 2017.

Teeter enters his fourth season at Louisville. He has a 161-148 record in 18 seasons as a head coach and is 16-28 in his three seasons at Louisville.

Florida is coming off a 6-2 season in 2020 after the campaign was cut short due to COVID-19. The squad finished ranked eighth in the nation according to the IWLCA poll and knocked off two Top-3 teams in Maryland and Stony Brook. Florida was picked No. 8 in the IWLCA preseason poll and was tabbed to win the American Athletic Conference. Florida received five of the six first-place votes and led the conference with six preseason All-AAC players, including four unanimous selections. Brianna Harris was named Preseason Attacker of the Year, Cara Trombetta was tabbed as Preseason Co-Defender of the Year, Shannon Kavanagh earned Preseason Midfielder of the Year honors and Sarah Reznick was named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Harris, Kavanagh, Reznick and Trombetta were joined on the Preseason All-AAC team by Kaitlyn Dabkowski and Grace Haus.
