
Cardinals Finish Second at Purdue Invitational

Louisville posts five wins and sets diving school record in final day of competition.
The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming team both finished second at the Purdue Invitational powered by five wins and a diving school record on Saturday evening at the at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The Cardinal women finished behind only Northwestern and the men trailed only  host Purdue.

 In the 1650 freestyle, Louisville's Liberty Williams'  time of 16:36.31 vaulted her into second place. In the men's race, newcomer Eli Shoyat stopped the clock 15:20.24 for third and teammate Hayden Curley was fourth with a time of 15.21.49. Tyler Klawiter was seventh, posting a 15:32.85.

In the women's 200 backstroke, Louisville's Tatiana Salcutan made a B-cut with a 1:55.13, good for second place. Paige Hetrick was fourth with a time of 1:56.16 another B-cut in the A-final. In the men's 200 back, Mitchell Whyte held off the field to get into the wall first with a time of 1:42.65 and a B-cut time. Neal Morsi won the B-final with a timev of 1:46.26, just ahead of Louisville's Jack Wever with a 1:46.91.

Arina Openysheva battled the field down the stretch winning in the B-cut time of 48.56 in the A-final of the 100 freestyle. Louisville freshman Polina Nevmovenko was eighth in the A-final with a 50.58. Michael Eastman's B-cut time of 43.15 to take third in the men's 100 free. Colton Paulson was fifth 43.49, also a B-cut. In the B-final, Santiago Aguilera was 10th (44.10) and Caleb Duncan was 16th (45.11).

Evgenii Somov won the men's 200 breaststroke with a B-cut time of 1:54.91 in the A-final. In the same final, Cardinal Daniel Sos was fourth with a B-cut time of 1:56.96In the women's 200 breast, Louisville's Mariia Astashkina was third with a B-cut time of 2:08.82 with teammate Adeline Farrington touching sixth with a time of 2:14.11.Â

The Cardinal women took the top four places in the 200 butterfly led by Abby Hay's 1:54.92. Gabi Albiero was second in 1:55.42, just ahead of Tristen Ulett's 1:55.87 and Alena Kraus's time of 1:56.69. Â Gustavo Saldo won the B-final for a B-cut time of 1:45.40.

The Cardinal women took top honors in the final 400 freestyle relay, when Gabi Albiero (48.98), Arina Openysheva (47.98), Paige Hetrick (48.96) and Tristen Ulett's anchor of 48.54 for an NCAA A-cut of 3:14.15. The men finished second in their 400 Free relay with a B-cut time of 2:51.53 put up by Michael Eastman (43.01), Colton Paulson (42.47), Evgenii Somov (42.83) and Santiago Aguilera (43.22).

In platform diving, Kivanc Gur scored a school record 373.10 to finish second. Che Stephens 278.05 was eighth and Alekzander Popper was ninth with a 275.10 and Logan Smith placed 10th with a score of  251.40.
