It will be a wild slate as teams are loaded with two years' worth of seniors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's tennis program has released their 2020-21 schedule. This will be the Cardinals' first action of the season after fall events were cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic.
Â
"It's going to be great to get back on the court and compete again. We had our season cut short last year and weren't allowed to have any fall events," head coach Mark Beckham said. "It's safe to say everyone is excited to get back at it."
Â
The spring season will open in South Bend as the Cardinals participate in the Notre Dame Invitational from January 15-17. Louisville will return home to close out the month, hosting MAC opponents Ball State on January 24 and Miami (Ohio) on January 30.
Â
Louisville will then spend a week on the road, traveling to Wichita, Kansas to compete against home Wichita State on February 5 and Iowa State on back-to-back days. The Cardinals will finish this road trip in Nashville against Vanderbilt on February 12.
Â
"Nothing has changed as far as level of competition with our schedule, this one might be the most challenging that we have ever had, headlined by former National Champion Vanderbilt." Beckham added.
Â
The Cardinals will be back in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center for a three-match home stretch, hosting UT Martin on February 14 and ACC conference members Syracuse on February 19 and Boston College on February 21.
Â
February 26 marks the start of the toughest challenge of the season for the Cardinals. The team will compete in four road matches in a span of a week, starting with a meet in Chapel Hill against North Carolina of February 26 and ending with matches at Duke on February 27, Virginia Tech on March 5, and Virginia on March 6.
Â
"The ACC is the best women's tennis conference in the country, but the fact that seniors were allowed back this year because the pandemic has created super talented and experienced teams. There are opponents that I have been waiting four years to be gone and now these could be some of the best teams the conference has ever seen. It is pretty crazy to think about but a whole lot of fun to go out, compete, and win against." Beckham acknowledged.
Â
The back end of the schedule features a home weekend from March 12-14 where the Cardinals host North Carolina State and Wake Forest. The program then travels to Florida for two matches at Florida State and Miami. The next two matches include a quick stop in Louisville to host nearby Xavier on March 26 before a return to South Bend on April 2.
Â
The Cardinals conclude the regular season at home starting with an April 9 contest against Georgia Tech and finishing with Clemson on April 11. The ACC Tournament will take place April 15-19 at the Rome (Georgia) Tennis Center. Â
