Amo, Conte Selected in Major League Soccer SuperDraft
January 21, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Amo was taken 34th overall by Real Salt Lake, while Conte was selected 40th by New York Red Bulls.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer program had a pair of players taken in the 2021 Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Thursday.
Elijah Amo was selected in the second round with the 34th overall pick by Real Salt Lake, while Lamine Conte followed six picks later at No. 40 to New York Red Bulls.
Amo and Conte are the 24th and 25th student-athletes from Louisville chosen in the MLS SuperDraft all-time, giving the Cardinals 10 draft picks in the last five years.
A native of Lothian, Md., Amo has played four seasons with the Louisville program. He has appeared in 54 matches over the last four years, serving as a starter each of the last two. Amo netted three goals in his first three seasons at UofL, but tallied three more in just six matches during the 2020 fall season.
Conte joined the Cardinals in 2018 after a pair of seasons at the University of Mobile to start his collegiate career. The Guinea native made 15 starts during the 2018 season before an injury cost him the majority of the 2019 campaign. Conte returned in 2020 to start all eight matches at center back during the fall and logged 742 minutes, the second-most on the team. Conte was an ACC Championship All-Tournament Team selection in 2018, helping the Cardinals to their first ACC title.
Conte is the second Louisville player drafted in as many years by New York Red Bulls after Cherif Dieye was selected 15th overall by New York last year.
Louisville played the first portion of its 2020 season during the fall and will resume play later in the spring.
