Redshirt sophomore checks in from the Chicago area
With the spring season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Louisville women's tennis team had their spring interrupted. We are checking in with Jelena Vujanic, a redshirt-sophomore from Elk Grove Village, Ill. (Elk Grove H.S.). Vujanic transferred from Valparaiso University.
Q: What are your thoughts on spring season being canceled?
A: "It was truly disappointing. Â We had been working consistently hard this year and we had a lot of good matches left to play. However, I know we have a lot of bright things in our future to look forward to."Â
Q: What are you doing with yourself during your free time?Â
A: "Reading a lot, taking my dog for walks, trying to learn how to cook, watching Netflix."Â
Q: What did you have originally planned for spring break and what did you actually do?
A: " I planned to be at school preparing for future matches during break but instead I'm at home. Tennis clubs and gym are closed so can't necessarily replicate the training level. But the weather gets better I will certainly try playing outside."
Q: How are you continuing to stay in shape during this time?
A: "Doing the at home training program that Caryn Bailey of Sports Performance sent and going for runs/walks with my dogs outside."
Q: What were your impressions on the spring season up to the point before the cancellation?
A:Â "I thought we were making the adjustments we needed both mentally and physically. I could really see major improvements being made."
Q: What will you miss most about being on campus?
A: "I'll miss being with my teammates and coaches, they are all like family to me."Â
Â
Q: Have you and your teammates been keeping in contact through all of this and how?
A: "Yes, we have been texting a lot and FaceTiming frequently."
Q: Is there anything you would like to say to Card Nation?
A: "Thank you for your endless support! It has meant the world to us to have the consistent radiation of positivity during a time like this."
Q: What is your favorite memory of this season prior to the sudden end?
A: "Winning the doubles point against NC State was really exciting. We all worked together and fought really hard to win that. The energy and smiles were all there. I really enjoy the moments where you can see everyone is genuinely happy and loving what we're doing."Â
Â
Q: What is your favorite memory as a Cardinal?
A: "My favorite memory as a Cardinal was probably the first tournament at Purdue in the fall. This was the first time we traveled and our first tournament of the year. Not only did we very well results wise, but it also gave me an opportunity to travel and get to know my new teammates better. Coming from a smaller school with limited resources to a program like this makes me extra grateful for what I have here. I think that was the really big moment where I realized how incredibly lucky I was to have amazing teammates and the two best coaches I could ever ask for."Â
Â
Q: Are you home or on campus? (Either way, what have you been doing?
A: "I am at home, I've been playing a lot of games with my little brother, watching Grey's Anatomy, still have a lot of class work to do."
Â
Q: How have people in your family been directly affected by the virus?Â
A: "All my siblings are home from school, parents still working but shorter hours."Â
