Louisville Falls 2-1 in Eight Innings to Illinois

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 2-1 in eight innings to Illinois in the Cardinals' home opener Friday on day one of the Red & Black Challenge at Ulmer Stadium.

Redshirt junior Carmyn Greenwood led the Cards at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Roby took the loss, surrendering two earned runs on four hits and striking out five in 8.0 innings.

The Cardinals (7-13) jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the first inning. Senior Celene Funke delivered a leadoff hit, stole second and took third on a passed ball. Redshirt junior Carmyn Greenwood's RBI single plated Funke to put Louisville up 1-0.

The Illini (9-9) answered in the fourth. Delaney Rummell was hit by a pitch and moved to third when Bella Loya reached on an error. Danielle Davis drove her in with an RBI hit to even the score at 1-1.

Louisville had a chance to score in the bottom of the seventh when junior Madison Ciaccio connected on a pinch-hit, two-out double to put the go-ahead run in scoring position, but a fly out end the threat.

With the game still knotted at 1-1, Illinois broke through with a run in the eighth when Rummell registered a two-out hit and came home on a double by Loya to put the Illini up 2-1.

Addy Jarvis (5-4) picked up the win the win, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out eight in a complete game effort.
