March 07, 2020 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. –Chardonnay Harris tossed a two-hitter, Jordyn Wolfe went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Carmyn Greenwood connected on a two-run double to send the University of Louisville softball team to a 3-1 win over Northwestern on day two of the Red & Black Classic at Ulmer Stadium. Â
Â
The Cardinals (8-13) rallied from a 1-0 deficit, scoring two runs in the fifth and tacking on an insurance run in the sixth to back Harris, who struck out five and didn't issue a walk in a complete game effort.
Â
Northwestern (9-12) took a 1-0 lead behind a solo home run by Danielle Williams in the second inning.
Â
The Cardinals answered in the home half of the fifth when Wolfe led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout by freshman Jenna Servi. Madison Ciaccio earned a two-out walk to put a pair of runners on for Carmyn Greenwood's two-run double which put the Cards up 2-1.
Â
The sixth inning brought another Louisville run when Caitlin Ferguson was hit by a pitch and scored on Wolfe's second double of the game to extend the Cardinals' lead to 3-1.
Â
After surrendering the home run in the second, Harris and the Louisville defense retired 10 straight batters before an error and a sacrifice bunt moved a Northwestern runner into scoring position in the sixth, but the Cardinals retired the final five batters to end the game.
Â
Danielle Williams (3-6) took the loss after surrendering three earned runs on five hits and striking out nine in 7.0 innings. She and Maeve Nelson registered the Wildcats' only hits of the game.
Â
UofL will wrap up tournament play on Sunday when the Cards take on Illinois at 12:15 p.m. and Evansville at 4:45 p.m.
