
Louisville Opens Season at Cincinnati on Sunday

The Cardinals and Bearcats will begin play at 1 p.m. ET.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse opens the 2020 campaign at Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.

Louisville is 9-3 all-time in season openers and had won four straight prior to losing 21-11 at No. 7 Northwestern last season.

Two years ago, in Scott Teeter's debut as head coach, the Cardinals won at Cincinnati, 15-9. They went on to win four of their first five games.

The Cardinals' roster features just two seniors in midfielder Brenna Shanahan and defender Allie Arcidiacono.

Shanahan came to Louisville from Canisius with Teeter two years ago. She played in just four games her first season in the Derby City after suffering a season-ending knee injury and redshirted. Last season, she ranked fifth in the ACC with 1.4 caused turnovers per game. She led the team with 14 assists, while chipping in 30 ground balls.
Junior Caroline Blalock was named preseason All-ACC by the league's coaches. As a freshman, she was named All-ACC Second Team after leading the team with 43 goals, 55 points and 24 caused turnovers. Last season, she was named ACC All-Academic Team and her 23 caused turnovers ranked third on the team, eighth in the ACC and tied for 10th in UofL single season history. Last year, she ranked fourth on the team with 30 points, third with 10 assists and fifth with 20 goals.
It marks the beginning of year three for Teeter, who came to Louisville two seasons ago after leading Canisius to six conference titles and six trips to the NCAA Tournament in seven years.
The Cardinals are coming off a season where they finished 5-13 overall.

ABOUT THE BEARCATS
Cincinnati went 12-7 overall and 4-1 in American Athletic Conference play a season ago. They advanced to the AAC Tournament Championship game with a win over Temple (W, 13-9) before falling to No. 18 Florida (L, 15-9).

The Bearcats return their leading goal scorer, senior Monica Borzillo. Borzillo led the Bearcats with 61 goals (3.2 per game) and 47 assists (2.5 per game) for a total of 108 points. Sophomore Kylie Nause and junior Alyssa Adams also return. Nause was second on the team in goal scoring with 41 (2.2 per game) and Adams finished the season third in goals with 36 (1.9 per game).
Series History - UofL is 12-0 all-time against Cincinnati and 6-0 on the road. The Cardinals won 18-12 at home last season. In the last meeting in the Queen City, Louisville won 15-9 on February 9, 2018.

The Last Meeting (March 14, 2019) - Kayla Marshall and Shayla Scanlan each scored four goals to propel Louisville to an 18-12 win over Cincinnati. Louisville opened the game on a 5-0 run in the first eight minutes. Scanlan scored just 40 seconds into the game to put the Cardinals on the board. The Cardinals took a 10-goal lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game, prompting a five-goal run by Cincinnati to pull within six. Louisville held a steady lead the rest of the way to take the win, 18-12.
