Cardinals Open Season with 16-11 Win at Cincinnati
February 09, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
Three Cardinals recorded hat tricks in the season opener.
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Ally Hall led the Cardinals with four goals, while Allegra Catalano and Hannah Morris both recorded hat tricks in Louisville's season-opening 16-11 win at Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm pretty happy with the overall effort today and I thought we competed for 60 minutes," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We know we have a lot of players who can put the ball in the back of the net and we just have to find them and spread the ball around."
The Bearcats opened scoring early in the first half, but Hall quickly responded with a free position goal for the equalizer. From there, Louisville scored the next three goals while Rachel Florek held the Bearcats without a goal for 15 minutes.
Caroline Blalock, Catalano, and Hall netted two goals apiece as Louisville went into halftime with an 8-4 advantage over Cincinnati.
Louisville came out of the break on a 4-0 run as Catalano completed the hat trick in her debut as a Cardinal. Hall netted back-to-back goals to extend the Cardinals' lead to eight, and Hannah Morris added three goals of her own during the second half.
UofL's defense continued to apply pressure and limited the Bearcats to only one shot during the opening 14 minutes of the second half. Despite Cincinnati outscoring the Cardinals 5-2 in the final 10 minutes, Louisville held on for a 16-11 win.
Eight Cardinals recorded goals and Izzy Holmes had a team-high three assists. Florek finished the game with nine saves on 22 shots.
Louisville returns to action as they host Denver for the home opener on Saturday, Feb. 15 at noon.
