Offense Falters in 2-0 Loss to Wisconsin

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push a run across as the Cards fell 2-0 to Wisconsin in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Friday evening at North Carolina's Anderson Stadium.

The Cardinals will face the Badgers again Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Taylor Roby (1-2) took the loss after surrendering two earned runs on five hits and striking out six in a complete game effort. She also registered one of the Cardinals' three hits along with senior Celene Funke and junior Jordyn Wolfe.

The only scoring in the game came in the second inning when Wisconsin (5-1) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second. Stephanie Lombardo and Morgan Kummer delivered back-to-back hits. Fiona Girardot's fielder's choice saw Kummer out at second. Lombardo was safe on a play at the plate on Jolie Fish's sacrifice bunt attempt. Girardot was also safe at the plate when Lauren Foster reached on a fielder's choice.
After a leadoff single by Ally Miklesh in the fifth, Roby and the Cardinals' defense retired nine straight batters to end the game.

Louisville started to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Roby registered a leadoff hit and was lifted for pinch runner sophomore Charley Butler. Sophomore Cassady Greenwood walked to place the tying run on with one out. Freshman Elana Ornelas reached on a fielder's choice which saw Butler safe at third on an error to load the bases with one out. Wisconsin pitcher Kaitlyn Menz delivered a strikeout and got a flyout to end the game.

Menz (4-0) picked up the win, scattering three hits and striking out five in 7.0 innings. Â Â
