Cards Upend Badgers 3-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated Wisconsin 3-2 in the third game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Saturday at North Carolina's Anderson Stadium.

Louisville will wrap up the weekend against No. 11/8 Michigan Sunday at 10 a.m.

Cassady Greenwood went 2-for-3 with a run and the game-winning RBI while Carmyn Greenwood went 2-for-3 with a run and Maddy Newman connected on a two-run triple to lead the Cards offensively. Taylor Roby (2-2) earned the win in the circle after giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and striking out five in a complete game effort.

The teams played through three scoreless innings before the Cardinals (2-6) broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Cassady Greenwood got the offense started with an infield hit and Carmyn Greenwood followed with a single to set up Newman's two-run triple.

Wisconsin (5-2) answered in the home half of the fourth. Stephanie Lombardo and Caroline Hedgcock connected on back-to-back singles. Morgan Kummer's RBI single plated Lombardo and Hedgcock crossed the plate on an error. With a runner on third and one out in the inning, freshman Jenna Servi caught a line drive and stepped on third base for a double play to keep the score tied at 2-2.

The Cards moved back ahead in the fifth when Servi led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a groundout by senior Caitlin Ferguson and crossed the plate on a hit by Cassady Greenwood.

The Badgers threatened to score again in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Konwent delivered a leadoff hit and walks to Hedgcock and Kummer loaded the bases with two outs, but Roby issued a called strikeout to get out of the jam.

Haley Hestekin (1-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
