Louisville Loses to No. 11/8 Michigan 6-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team lost to No. 11/8 Michigan 6-2 on the first day of the 2020 ACC/Big Ten Challenge Friday at North Carolina's Anderson Stadium. The Cardinals (1-5) will return to action Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Wisconsin.

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Roby connected on her third home run of the season and drove in two while sophomore Cassady Greenwood went 2-for-3 to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Louisville totaled six hits in the game.

Michigan (6-0) took a 2-0 lead in the second when Taylor Bump singled and Haley Hoogenraad was hit by a pitch to set up a two-out, two-run double by Madison Uden.

The Wolverines extended the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Lexie Blair registered a leadoff double and, one out later, scored on another double by Lou Allan. A hit by Morgan Overatis placed runners on corners and Allan was safe on a play at the plate after Bump's sacrifice bunt attempt.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard behind Roby's two-run homer in the fifth. Junior Maddy Newman got the inning started with a hit and Roby followed with a shot over the left field fence for her third homer of the season which cut Michigan's lead in half.

Michigan countered with two more runs in the fifth with RBI singles by Hannah Carson and Hoogenraad, pushing the score to 6-2. Â
Louisville had scoring chances throughout the game, moving runners into scoring position in five different innings, but stranded eight in the contest.Â

Junior Chardonnay Harris (0-4) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. Freshman Taja Felder surrendered two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout in 3.2 innings of relief.

Alex Storako (3-0) got the win after giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out nine in 4.0 innings.
