Swimming Races in Three-Day Format

Sumida, Somov and Sameh shine for Cards
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville swim team completed the first day of a three day competition at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. Set to mimic a championship meet such as the ACC Championships, the Cardinals raced each other in a prelims and finals format.

In the finals of the 500 freestyle, Maria Sumida took top honors with a time of 4:41.63, shaving five seconds off her prelim time. Alena Kraus touched second with a time of 4:44.34 just barely edging Liberty Williams' 4.44.38.

In the men's 500, Hayden Curley posted the winning time of 4:17.18 with Ilia Sibirtsev clocking in at 4:19.69 and T.C. Smith touching in 4:21.61.

In the 200-IM, Sumida was the winner with a time of 1:57.72, followed by freshman Tristen Ulett, who stopped the clock at 1:58.41. Morgan Friesen was third in 2:03.71.

In the men's 200-IM, Evgenii Somov put up a 1:45.44, four seconds faster than second place finisher Jack Wever, who touched in 1:49.38. Greyson Alarcon was third in 1:49.79.

In the 50 free, freshman Gabi Albiero was first with a time of 22.38, followed by Christiana Regenauer's 22.65. Kaylee Wheeler was third with a 23.01.

In the men's 50 free, Haridi Sameh was into the wall in 19.45, just ahead of Mihalis Deliyiannis's 19.74. Caleb Duncan was third with a 19.97.

In the 200 free relay, the foursome of Gabi Albiero (22.32), Christiana Regenauer (21.91), Katie Schorr (22.65) and Kaylee Wheeler (22.73) put up the winning time of 1:29.61.

In the men's 200 free relay, Haridi Sameh (19.31), Mihalis Deliyiannis (19.26), Nicolas Albiero (19.26) and Tanner Cummings (19.35) put up the winning time of 1:17.33.

In the 400 medley relay, Ashlyn Schoof (53.76), Kaylee Wheeler (59.16), Gabi Albiero (52.35) and Christiana Regenauer (49.08) combined for a winning time of 3:34.35. The men's event was won by Mitchell Whyte (47.57), Evgenii Somov (50.48), Nicolas Albiero (45.20) and anchored by Haridi Sameh's 42.40 for a time of 3:05.62.
Tomorrow will feature the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 back and 800 free relay with prelims at 10 and finals at 6 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.Â
