Overtime Strike Sinks Cardinals in Home Finale
October 30, 2020 | Men's Soccer
Elijah Amo scored his third goal of the season in the loss.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A 93rd minute goal handed the University of Louisville men's soccer team a 2-1 defeat against Virginia Tech on Friday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Jake Gelnovatch turned in a strong effort in net, tallying a career-best 10 saves as the Hokies took 26 shots at the goal. The 10 saves were the most by a Louisville goalkeeper since Aug. 30, 2006 when Dan Williams finished with the same number against Kentucky.
It was a scoreless stalemate through 45 minutes on Friday night, with Gelnovatch keeping Virginia Tech out of the net with six first-half saves. The Cardinals managed a pair of shots of their own, both of which were turned away as well.
Virginia Tech (1-1-2, 1-1-2 ACC) finally broke through in the 57th minute, getting a clean cross that led to a tap-in for Jacob Labovitz.
Louisville (1-5-1, 1-3-1 ACC) leveled the match 15 minutes later on the third goal of the season from Elijah Amo. Pedro Fonseca played a ground pass from near midfield through to Amo who then buried a left-footed shot in the upper left corner from the top of the box to knot the score at one.
The Hokies had three more looks at the net come up empty over the final 18 minutes of regulation, and Eric Danquah's attempt in the final minute missed wide right to send the match into overtime.
Less than three minutes into the first extra period, Labovitz found the net for a second time to give Virginia Tech the victory.
The Hokies recorded 26 shots on the night to just five for the Cardinals.
Louisville will close out the fall regular season on the road next Friday at Notre Dame. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
