Sanga, Kipkosgei Lead Cards in Live in Lou Cross Country Classic
October 03, 2020 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams each posted a fifth place finish in the 2020 Live in Lou Cross Country Classic Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park. Purity Sanga led the way for the women with a third-place finish while Shadrack Kipkosgei paced the men, finishing sixth.
"I was very pleased with the progress we saw today from Purity and Shadrack," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "They are continuing to move in a direction that will put each of them in clear contention for all-ACC honors later this month. As a group we looked a little flat today and need to focus on making sure we are recovering at a high level in between our last workout of the week and race day."
The Louisville women had three finishers among the top 30 en route to a fifth-place showing with an overall tally of 124. Notre Dame won the 5K meet with 47 points followed by Ole Miss (54), Kentucky (76) and Tennessee (93). Sanga clocked in a personal-best time of 16:54.8 to finish third while Bailey Beery registered a time of 17:32.6 to place 19th. Ivine Chemutai crossed the line at No. 26 with a time of 17:40. Emma Bryant (18:00.4) and Lindsay Fanz (19:23.2) finished 37th and 67th respectively.
On the men's side, the Cards placed fifth with 132 points, Ole Miss took first with 28 points, followed by Charlotte (69), Kentucky (72) and Tennessee (78).
Kipkosgei registered a personal-best time of 23:55.3 for a sixth-place showing in the 8K leading a trio of Cardinals who finished in the top 30. Albert Kosgei clocked in at 24:31.9 to place 24th and Cameron Stephens finished at No. 27 with a time of 24:46.8. Ben Ewert (25:14.6) and Ryan Johnston (25:21.7) placed 42nd and 44th respectively.
The Cardinals return to action on October 16 when they travel to Hoover, Alabama for the Blazer Classic.
