
Sanga Leads Cardinals to Blazer Cross Country Classic Title

HOOVER, Ala. – Redshirt junior Purity Sanga won the Gold Division of the Blazer Cross Country Classic, leading the University of Louisville women's cross country team to a first place finish in the 6K race Friday morning at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala.
"This was a tremendous step forward for our women's squad today," said UofL head Coach Dale Cowper. "Our staff expected the group to get better as the race distance moved from five to six kilometers and we saw that happen this morning. The team victory is a true team effort with Purity Sanga earning the victory, Bailey Beery running a new personal best to finish 4th, along with Ivine Chemutai and Emma Bryant showing terrific progress inside the top 10."
Sanga led the field with a time of 20:43.04, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The Cardinals went on to place four in the top 10 with senior Bailey Beery clocking in with a personal best time of 21:00.61 to finish fourth. Junior Ivine Chemutai finished eighth with a time of 21:21.31 while junior Emma Bryant was right behind her at 21:24.71 to finish in ninth place.
Sophomore Callie Friske posted a time of 23:29.96 to place 60th while junior Lindsey Fanz (23:43.51) finished at No. 66. Competing in their first college 6K race, were sophomore Sarah Terzotis who registered a time of 24:18.22 (79th) and freshman Ashley Wight who clocked in at 24:31.70 (83rd).
In the overall team standings, Louisville captured the Gold Division title with 77 points. Clemson followed with 106 points and South Carolina (115), Arkansas State 116) and Auburn (117) rounded out the top five teams.
With the regular season races now complete, the Cardinals will prepare for the ACC Cross Country Championships which will take place Oct. 30 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
