Â
About the Hokies
After a slow start to the season in which they struggled against a gauntlet of ranked teams to an 0-5 record, Virginia Tech enters its matchup against Louisville with some momentum. The Hokies have won two of their last three games, the first coming in the form of a 2-0 victory against then-No. 14 Pittsburgh on Oct. 4 and their most-recent thrashing of Miami, who they beat 8-2 on Thursday night. The 8-goal performance marked the most in school history, and nearly quadrupled their total goals on the season. Alyson Brown joined Karlie Johnson and Tori Powell as team scoring leaders with two goals in the game. Defensively, Virginia Tech generally plays Alia Skinner, who has amassed nearly 622 minutes played this season in which she has tallied 54 saves and a .831 saving clip. The rush of scoring came as a relief to the Hokies, who have suffered five shutout losses this season.
Â
Series History
Louisville is 3-2-2 all-time against Virginia Tech in a rivalry that stretches back to 1986. Louisville won the first matchup 1-0 in Louisville, and the two teams wouldn't meet again until engaging in a home-and-home in 1994 and 1995. Louisville won both of those contests, which would be the last until the Cardinals joined the ACC in 2014. Louisville is yet to defeat the Hokies since joining the league, losing twice and playing to a pair of tie games in ACC play.
Â
Last Meeting (Oct. 25, 2018)
Louisville dropped its 2018 season finale to Virginia Tech in a 1-0 heartbreaker that earned the Hokies the last spot in the ACC tournament. A goal by Jordan Hemmen in the 36th minute off a corner kick from Emily Gray served as the ultimate game-winner despite being Virginia Tech's only shot on goal. Louisville fired off eight shots, three of which hit the target but none entered the net in the frustrating loss before postseason play.
