Gabby Kouzelos sets career record for saves
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville women's soccer team dropped its second game of the season Thursday night, falling 2-0 at No. 11 Virginia.
Louisville goaltender Gabby Kouzelos earned a career-high 10 saves against the Cavaliers (5-1-1), two shots managed to get past her in the first half as Virginia controlled the tempo from start to finish to limit Louisville's (3-2) chances.
The first goal of the game came in the 24th minute as Alexa Spaanstra scored the first goal from the top of the 18 off a pass from the base line from Alissa Gorzak.
Spaanstra also scored the second goal 10 minutes later after Ravin Alexander slide tackled a Cavalier inside the box. Spaanstra took advantage of the penalty kick, putting it in the back of the net to give Virginia a 2-0 lead it would maintain for the remainder of the game.
The two goals are the most Kouzelos and the Cardinals have given up this season. The only other goal Louisville gave up came in its 1-0 loss to Florida State on Sept. 20.
Lousiville's only two chances against the Cavaliers came in the form of two shots on goal from Nadege L'Esperance and Jessica Camken, who got those shots off in the first half and second half, respectively.
The Cardinals will stay on the road this weekend, crossing the state of Virginia to take on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Sunday at 2 p.m.
