No. 25-ranked Cardinals Sweeps Dayton

UofL wins 25-17, 25-14, 25-19; Aiko Jones named All-Tournament
Melanie McHenry, Claire Chaussee and Aiko Jones each had eight kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-19 sweep of Dayton in the final match of the Cardinal Classic Sunday afternoon at the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

UofL (2-1) hit .289 for the match with six aces, six blocks and 44 digs. The Cardinals got four blocks from Emily Scott, who also added five kills, Alexis Hamilton had 11 digs and Anna Stevenson had six kills and two blocks. Dayton, now 0-3, hit .042 with six aces and four blocks. Jamie Peterson led the Flyers with 12 kills. Aiko Jones was named All-Tournament for the Cardinals.Â

The Cardinals ran out to an 8-1 lead in the first set, powered by setter Shannon Shields, who served for the first five points with three aces in that span. Dayton got within six at 17-11 on a Cardinal hitting error but UofL countered with a 5-0 run to go up 23-12. UofL then committed three errors and Dayton got a kill from Jamie Peterson to make up ground but UofL recovered its footing and took the set 25-17. Claire Chaussee paced the Louisville offense with four kills. UofL had a total of four aces in the set. The Flyers hit .000 for the set.

In the second game, Dayton stayed within one point and even had a three point lead at 7-4 on a kill by Jamie Peterson. The Cards used a 6-0 run to go up 16-9 on a kill by Claire Chaussee. Up 19-11, Melanie McHenry scored four of the last six points and added an ace to boot as the Cardinals won 25-14.

In the third set, Dayton used two straight aces by Jamie Peterson to take an 18-14 lead. UofL called timeout to regroup and then went on a 3-0 run sparked by two straight kills by Emily Scott from the middle to force a Flyer timeout. UofL scored four straight coming out of the time out. After Dayton committed two consecutive hitting errors, the Flyers burned their final timeout down 21-18. Coming out of that timeout, the Flyers committed two hitting error and were aced. They scored on a hitting error by Melanie McHenry but then Grace Dynda had a service error that gave set and match to the Cardinals.

UofL hosts the Fleur de Lis Tournament next week as Arizona State, Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech head to Derby City. UofL takes on Tennessee Tech Friday, Sept. 6 at 12:30 p.m. for its first appearance in the tournament.
