Cards Host Morehead State in Home Opener Sunday Night

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's soccer team will host Morehead State in the home opener on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 win over Ohio State on Thursday night.Â
The Cardinals fell behind 1-0 early in the first half. Senior Brooklynn Rivers scored the equalizer in the 29th minute of the first half. In the second half, sophomore Maisie Whitsett scored the game-winner in the 85th minute to help the Cards move to 1-0 to start the season.   Â
The Cardinals return 10 starters and 20 letterwinners from last season. All five leading scorers return for the Cards – Brooklynn Rivers, Maisie Whitsett, Emina Ekic, Allison Whitfield, and Delaney Snyder.Â

Louisville also returns starting keeper Gabby Kouzelos and defenders Niamh Nelson, Arianna Ferraro, and Sarah Hernandez. The Cardinal defense held opponents to 1.05 goals and 6.6 shots per game during the 2018 season. Louisville finished the year with seven shutouts, including five ACC opponents. Kouzelos registered 38 saves for the Cardinals and holds a goals against average of 1.06.
SCOUTING Morehead STATE
Morehead State is looking to build on a 2018 season that saw the program return to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since 2016.Â

On the offensive end, junior midfielder Katie Quinn and sophomore defender Nicole Palmer are the only returning goal scorers. Quinn finished with two on eight shot attempts while Palmer knocked in one on 17 shots. Overall, Quinn and senior defender Morgan Treser top the team's career-goal count with three. Defensively, Nicole Palmer will anchor the Eagles along with freshmen goalkeepers Kayla Landman and Grace Gaffney.
