Sophomore Maisie Whitsett scored the game winner in the 85th minute
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Louisville women's soccer team came from behind for a 2-1 win over Ohio State in the season opener on Thursday night. Brooklynn Rivers scored the equalizer in the first half while Maisie Whitsett scored the game-winner late in the second half.
"I'm really proud of our team tonight," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We came from behind and scored two great goals against a very good team. Our defending was excellent and we gained a bit more of a rhythm with our possession in the second half, which allowed us to create more chances. Overall, it was a great win on the road to open up the season!"
The Buckeyes were able to take an early lead in the 18th minute with a goal from Marissa Birzon. The Cardinals responded in the 29th minute with a goal from Rivers. Rivers took the serve from Arianna Ferraro to knot the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals had a few chances in the final 15 minutes of the half. Sarah Hernandez and Delaney Snyder had shots on goal but OSU's Jordan Silkowitz made two saves to end the half in a tie.
Ohio State had a chance for the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute but Gabby Kouzelos made a big save. Rivers had another chance on a breakaway in the 84th minute but Silkowitz made another save. A minute later, Niamh Nelson served a long ball inside the box to Whitsett who sent the ball inside the right post for the game-winner.
Louisville finished the match with a 13-9 shot advantage, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Louisville also held a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Kouzelos finished with two saves while Ohio State's Silkowitz finished with seven.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 25 as they host Morehead State in the season opener at 7:30 p.m.
