Women's Soccer Hosts Annual Media Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's soccer team held its annual Fall Sports Media Day Thursday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. Head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, Emina Ekic, Arianna Ferraro, Gabby Kouzelos and Brooklynn Rivers met with the local media to preview their upcoming season.

Last season the Cardinals finished tied for fifth in the ACC with a record of 6-4, and made their fifth NCAA Championship appearance with an overall record of 12-7-0.   The Cardinals return 10 starters and 20 letterwinners this season. All five leading scorers return for the Cards - Rivers, Maisie Whitsett, Ekic, Allison Whitfield, and Delaney Snyder.Â

Louisville also returns starting keeper Gabby Kouzelos and defenders Niamh Nelson, Arianna Ferraro, and Sarah Hernandez. The Cardinal defense held opponents to 1.05 goals and 6.6 shots per game during the 2018 season. Louisville finished the year with seven shutouts, including five ACC opponents. Kouzelos registered 38 saves for the Cardinals and holds a goals against average of 1.06.

Ekic was named to the Preseason All-ACC Women's Soccer team in a vote of the league's 14 head coaches. The Cardinals were picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll, while North Carolina was the preseason favorite to win another conference title. Four teams were ranked among the top 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll while seven teams earned a preseason ranking. In total, 10 of the ACC's 14 teams received votes for consideration in the preseason top 25.

The Cardinals will host Butler on Saturday, Aug. 17 for an exhibition match. The home slate kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 25 as the Cards host Morehead State at 7:30 p.m.Â
