LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville third baseman Alex Binelas was named a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday.
Binelas is the 17th player in program history to pick up freshman All-America honors and the 14th under head coach Dan McDonnell.
The Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native has been a driving force in the middle of the Louisville lineup, hitting .308 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs. His 14 home runs lead the Cardinals and he is the first UofL freshman to reach double digits in home runs since Chris Dominguez did so as a redshirt freshman in 2007.
After starting his collegiate career just 2-for-19, Binelas first broke through with a 2-for-4 showing against Ole Miss on March 13, launching his first career homer and driving in four. The freshman was still hitting just .194 on March 24 however, before going on a month-long tear.
From March 26-April 30, Binelas hit .453 (34-for-75) with 10 doubles, four triples and six home runs, while driving in 28 and scoring 32 times in just 20 games. The stretch saw his average peak at .369 and helped him earn a pair of ACC Player of the Week honors, as well as Perfect Game National Player of the Week recognition for April 22-28.
Binelas had another shining moment in Monday's NCAA Regional final, singling with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning in a tie game to send the Cardinals into this week's Super Regional. He finished with six hits in the regional round and was named to the All-Louisville Regional team.
The Cardinals are back on the diamond on Friday for game one of the best-of-three Super Regional against East Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for noon ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
