Hensley and Chung homer as Cards and Wolfpack battle through 11 innings
The teams will wrap up the series, and the regular season, Sunday at 12 p.m.
The walk-off homer capped a wild game which saw three lead changes and two ties as each team rallied to erase a three-run deficit.
Freshman Rebecca Chung went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, senior Megan Hensley also had a home run and scored twice while sophomore Kyra Snyder connected on a two-run double to help pace the Cardinals at the plate.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Roby (13-3) took the loss after a valiant effort in the circle, surrendering three earned runs on three hits and striking out five in 10.0 innings.
The Wolfpack (28-26, 8-15 ACC) jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Sam Russ delivered a leadoff hit and April Visser followed with an RBI double. Logan Morris' two-run homer made the score 3-0.
The Cardinals (33-19, 12-11) got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Hensley launched a solo shot over the fence in right centerfield for her team-best 11th home run of the season.
Louisville's offense continued in the sixth with another home run, this time from Chung, who connected on a two-run shot over the left field fence. Hensley started the inning with a walk and, one out later, Chung stepped up to the plate and blasted her sixth home run of the season to even the score at 3-3.
The ninth inning brought three Louisville runs as the Cards took the lead for the first time in the game. Freshman Cassady Greenwood and junior Celene Funke lead off with back-to-back hits. Redshirt senior Sidney Melton beat the throw for an infield single to load the bases for Hensley's sacrifice fly to deep left field to put Louisville on top 4-3. Snyder belted out a two-run single to extend the lead to 6-3.
NC State answered in the home half of the ninth. A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases for Visser whose walk made the score 6-4. Skylar Johnson's two-run double tied the game at 6-6.
After the Cardinals were retired in order in the 10th, NC State had a scoring opportunity when hits by Jessica Moore and Sam Russ put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Moore attempted to cross the plate on a wild pitch, but a batter's interference ruling on the play at the plate marked the end of the frame.
A scoreless top of the 11th brought Visser back to the plate and she sent an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left centerfield for the 7-6 final.
The 11-inning contest marked the most innings in an ACC matchup this season – it also marked the most in a game for Louisville since May 19, 2006 when the Cards fell 1-0 to Virginia Tech in 12 innings in the Knoxville Regional.
Kama Woodall (2-3) got the win, allowing one hit and striking out four in 2.2 innings of relief. Morris finished the game with three RBIs and Visser had two RBIs and scored three runs to lead the Pack at the plate.
