Cards Clinch Series with 10-2 Win at Boston College
April 14, 2019 | Softball
Hensley drives in four with two home runs, Funke homers and collects three RBIs in the win
Senior Megan Hensley used two home runs to collect four RBIs and junior Celene Funke connected on a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly to drive in three as the University of Louisville softball defeated Boston College 10-2 in six innings Sunday at Harrington Village. With the victory, the Cardinals (27-15) clinch the series and improve to 8-7 in ACC play.
Â
Redshirt freshman Taylor Roby (10-1) picked up the win in the circle after holding the Eagles scoreless on one hit in 4.2 innings of relief. Funke went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs while Hensley finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate to go along with two runs and four RBIs.
Â
Louisville quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Funke led off the game with a hit and an error on the play sent her to third. Walks to redshirt senior Sidney Melton and freshman Rebecca Chung loaded the bases for Roby's sacrifice fly to put the Cards on the scoreboard.
Â
The Cardinals added a four-spot in the second when sophomore Kyra Snyder walked and freshman Charley Butler legged out an infield single. An error allowed sophomore Maddy Newman to reach and move to third while plating Snyder and Butler. Funke followed with a sac fly. Senior Megan Hensley's solo home run increased the lead to 5-0.
Â
The Eagles (14-25, 4-11 ACC) countered with a pair of runs in the home half of the second. A base hit and a walk set up Carly Severini's RBI double. Kennedy Labshere's groundout brought home another run to make the score 5-2.
Â
UofL continued its offensive production with two runs in the fourth as Funke launched a home run over the right field fence for her third homer of the season. Butler had started the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second and third to set up the two-run shot, which brought the score to 7-2.
Â
The Cards tallied three more runs in the sixth, courtesy of Hensley's three-run homer. Funke singled and Melton reached on an error to set up Hensley who sent a 1-1 count over the left field fence for her team-best eighth home run of the season.
Â
The Cardinals will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to in-state rival, No. 23/24 Kentucky at 6 p.m.
