Sarah Blalock Leads Charge, but Louisville Falls at No. 7 Virginia

Blalock led the Cardinals with six draw controls and a career-high four goals.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -Â University of Louisville women's lacrosse battled, but fell at No. 7 Virginia on Saturday afternoon, 16-12.

With the loss, they fall to 5-11 on the year and 0-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Cavaliers improve to 11-5 and 2-4.

"We battled the entire game and showed a lot of heart, but Virginia is a top ten team for a reason," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We were able to hang around, but some unforced errors really cost us."

Virginia opened the game with the first goal just 10 seconds in, but Louisville held tight and trailed 4-3 midway through the first half.

The Cavaliers then went on a 6-0 scoring run in the next six minutes to open a 9-3 lead.

Louisville responded by scoring the final two goals of the half to pull within 9-5 at the break. They then reeled off two more goals to open the second stanza and pulled within 9-7.

Virginia answered by scoring their first goal in over 16 minutes and then added another go back up 11-7.

Twice Louisville pulled back within three goals, but could not get closer as they fell 16-12.

After struggling on the draw in the first half, with the help of Sarah Blalock, Louisville controlled the draw 10-5 in the second stanza to change the complexion of the game.

In addition to leading the team with six draw controls, Sarah Blalock also finished with a career-high four goals.

"Sarah played outstanding and really changed the momentum in the second half," said Teeter.
Â
Tessa Chad and Alex McNicholas added two goals each for the Cardinals, while Brenna Shanahan finished with three assists. Shanahan also had three ground balls to give her an even 100 for her career.

Louisville was outshot 33-27, but had 17 shots to Virginia's 10 in the second half. After being beaten on the draw 11-4 in the first half, they pulled it to 16-14 for the game after the strong second half.

The Cardinals close out regular season play next Saturday at noon when they travel to play at No. 1 Boston College.
