March 09, 2019 | Baseball
Saturday’s game will resume on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with Louisville leading 10-0 and game three will follow immediately after.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville offense exploded for double digit runs, but the Cardinals couldn't beat the rain as their Saturday contest against Boston College was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Game two will resume on Sunday at 10:30 a.m., ET with the series finale to follow immediately after.
Louisville starting pitcher Nick Bennett is in line for the win should the Cardinals hold on for the victory. The junior tossed five shutout innings before exiting after the first weather delay.
The two teams were scoreless through the first three innings on Saturday before the Cardinals exploded in the fourth and fifth.
Danny Oriente opened the scoring for the second straight day with a single through the left side, but it was Zach Britton that blew the game open. With the bases loaded, Britton lined a ball past the diving right fielder that rolled to the wall and allowed all three runs to score. Zeke Pinkham then brought him home with a sacrifice fly to cap the five-run inning.
UofL kept the offense rolling in the fifth with Tyler Fitzgerald singling home Trey Leonard before the weather set in and forced a delay of 54 minutes.
The Cardinal offense picked right up where it left off when play resumed, with Fitzgerald coming around to score on another hit from Oriente. Jared Poland then tacked on two more with a double into the left field corner, and later scored on a wild pitch.
Garrett Schmeltz worked a scoreless top of the sixth and the game was stopped after Fitzgerald's one-out walk in the bottom of the frame.
