The Cards' 800 free relay team of Sophie Cattermole, Mallory Comerford, Arina Openysheva and Alena Kraus finished sixth overall.
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team sits in sixth place after the opening night of competition at the NCAA Championships following their All-American performance in the 800 freestyle relay.
"This meet is different. It's unlike any other meet, it's a meet where you come to compete," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "I think that's where I'm most proud of this group, to be able to come in and complete with a freshman in there on the anchor leg. We put her in a tough position, but she handled it well. I'm very proud of the group. We matched our best finish at sixth overall, and that puts us in a position to score some more points and get ready for tomorrow."
In the lone event of the evening, the Cardinals' 800 free relay team of Sophie Cattermole (1:46.39), Mallory Comerford (1:39.19), Arina Openysheva (1:44.56) and Alena Kraus (1:45.93) combined for a time of 6:56.07 to finish sixth and tie the best NCAA finish in program history in the event.
The quartet's time was the second fastest 800 free relay in Louisville history and was just under three seconds faster than the Cards' best time of the season set at the ACC Championships. Louisville's performance also marked the third straight year the Cards have earned All-American honors in the 800 free relay.
Comerford's split of 1:39.19 on the second leg of the relay was the fastest in the entire field of swimmers and the second fastest of all-time behind her 1:39.14 split from last year's championships.
The Cards will be back in action at NCAAs tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT for the prelims of the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay and 1-meter diving.
