Cardinals Break Three Records on Night Two of NCAA Championships
March 21, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
The 200 free relay, 50 free and 100 back UofL records fell on the second night of competition at NCAAs.
AUSTIN, Texas – Three program records fell for the University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team on the second night of competition at the NCAA Championships on Thursday evening at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
After two days of action, the Cardinals currently sit in fourth place with 100 points behind Stanford (173.5), California (173) and Michigan (129). The Cards' 76 points scored on the evening were also the most scored on night two of NCAAs in Louisville history.
"What an exciting day," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "That was our best finish in the 200 free relay and the most points we've ever scored at the end of day two. I think it says a lot. This is NCAA Championships, you just have to keep finding ways to score and put yourself in that position. You also have to have a short term memory and move on to the next race. I'm very proud of the effort today, and we're going to go get ready to swim tomorrow morning and have fun with it."
In the opening event of the evening, Lainey Visscher (22.27), Mallory Comerford (21.00), Avery Braunecker (21.80) and Casey Fanz (21.64) broke their own 200 free relay school record set during the morning's prelims with a time of 1:26.71 and placed fourth to earn the Cards their best finish in program history in the event.
Records continued to fall for the Cards as Comerford raced to a third place finish in the 50 free with a school record-breaking time of 21.49. With the bronze, the senior also matched the top 50 free finish in UofL history.
Alina Kendzior (51.71), Mariia Astashkina (59.45), Grace Oglesby (51.10) and Comerford (45.96) capped off the evening with a fifth place finish in the 400 medley relay, registering a time of 3:28.22.
Kendzior's lead-off leg on the 400 medley relay established a new school record, surpassing her own mark set at last year's NCAA Championships.
The Cards will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. ET for the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 medley relay and 3-meter diving.
