No. 7 Louisville Finishes Three-Game Sweep of Duke
March 17, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals rallied for an 8-6 victory to sweep the Blue Devils.
Louisville (16-4, 5-1 ACC) finished off the three-game sweep of the Blue Devils, its ninth road sweep in conference play since joining the ACC in 2015.
The Cardinals found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard midway through Sunday's contest, trailing 4-1 after five innings. UofL got a run in the first on Logan Wyatt's RBI groundout that scored Jake Snider, but the Blue Devils answered with three runs in the bottom half.
Duke (12-8, 2-4) put another run up in the third to jump in front by three while the Cardinals were in a stretch of nine straight retired at the plate.
In the sixth, UofL finally broke through as Henry Davis hit his second home run of the weekend to pull Louisville within two. Drew Campbell followed with a double and Jared Poland hammered a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left to knot the score up at four. The home run was the first of Poland's collegiate career.
After the Cardinals put a zero on the board in the bottom of the inning, the offense went back to work in the seventh. Zach Britton stroked a pinch-hit single to lead off the inning and Trey Leonard came on to run for him. Leonard proceeded to steal second and moved to third when the throw ended up in centerfield. The sophomore then scored on a passed ball to give the Cardinals the lead for the first time since the first inning.
Danny Oriente added to Louisville's lead with a run-scoring groundout and Davis drove in two more on a single to left that stretched the advantage out to four.
Shay Smiddy struck out three in the bottom of the seventh and Michael Kirian pitched a clean eighth to bring the Cardinals within three outs of the sweep. Kirian retired the first hitter in the ninth before turning it over to Bobby Miller. Miller allowed a pair of runs with two outs but got the final hitter to fly out to left to dinish off the game.
Smiddy (1-0) picked up the win with his 1.1 scoreless innings. Adam Elliott was first out of the bullpen for the Cardinals on Sunday, retiring the first 11 batters he faced before giving way to Smiddy with two outs in the sixth. The 3.2 innings were a career-long for Elliott, who struck out three.
Davis was 3-for-5 at the plate with the home run and three driven in. Snider had a 2-for-4 day with a pair of runs scored as the Cardinals tallied their ninth double-digit hits performance of the year.
Louisville will finish off its four-game road swing at Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET in Richmond.
