February 23, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
Tessa Chad and Shayla Scanlan led the way with five goals each.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse opened its home schedule with a bang as they routed Mercer 20-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The victory improves the Cardinals' record to 1-3, while the Bears fall to 0-3.
"Today was a great way to wrap up a great week of practice," said head coach Scott Teeter. "They came out ready to play and they played hard for 60 minutes."
Â
Louisville jumped out early as Caroline Blalock found the back of the net on an assist from Kirsten Parker just 58 seconds into the game.
Â
Tessa Chad then followed with back-to-back goals before Blalock scored again to give Louisville a 4-0 lead with 24:39 to go in the first half.
Â
The Cardinals scored 10 more times in the first half and goalkeeper Rachel Florek kept a clean sheet as they went into the locker room at half with 14-0 lead.
Â
Mercer scored their first goal of the game seven minutes into the second half. Louisville then scored six straight goals to build a 20-1 lead before winning 20-2.
Â
The 18-goal margin marked the biggest win for UofL since they won 23-2 at Cincinnati on April 6, 2014.
Â
Chad and Shayla Scanlan led the way for the Cardinals with five goals each, while Blalock added a hat trick of her own. Ally Hall and Alex McNicholas scored two goals each, while Brenna Shanahan, Kayla Marshall and Hannah Morris also found the back of the net.
Â
Blalock had a team-high three assists, while Scanlan added two dishes of her own.
Â
Louisville limited Mercer to just six shots on the game, outshooting the Bears 40-6. They also won draw controls 16-7, as McNicholas finished with seven and Sarah Blalock added five.
Â
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET when they host Vanderbilt.
