Cards sweep singles after losing doubles point
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Georgia State 4-1 Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
"We knew it was going to be a tough match," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "That's a team that they're in or right outside the NCAA Tournament every year. They're a great school right there in the heart of Atlanta. A lot of kids want to go there, internationals are interested in it because it's one of the biggest cities in the country, so Georgia State has got a great tennis program. We feel very fortunate winning today, even losing the doubles point. It made it very difficult for us, but I have confidence in the fight squad. I knew that when you rolled out those six singles, they were going to fight today. I didn't have any doubts, and I think everybody saw their personality."
Â
After falling behind early, the Cardinals (5-2) rallied with four straight singles wins en route to a 4-1 victory.
Â
Georgia State(2-2) took an early lead with wins on doubles courts two and three. The Panther duo of Bailey Showers and Diego Padilha upended Louisville seniors Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley 6-1. The Cardinals pulled even on court one where senior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and freshman Fabien Salle teamed to beat Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte 6-3. The first point of the match was decided at the No. 3 spot where Georgia State's Giles Hussey and Jack MacFarlane posted a 6-3 win over Louisville senior Federico Gomez and freshman Alex Wesbrooks.
Â
In singles action, Louisville evened the score when freshman Sergio Hernandez Ramirez beat Duarte 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5. Gomez quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Freshman David Mizrahi extended the lead to 3-1 when he beat Huynh 7-5, 6-4 at the six-spot.
Â
Hernandez Ramirez sealed the win on court three where he beat Vazha Subladze 7-5 in the first set and battled to a 7-6 (7-3) win in the second.
Â
The Cardinals return to action Sunday with a road match at Dartmouth.
