Cards fall behind 2-0, but rally to win 4-2
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated host Dartmouth 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Boss Tennis Center. The Cardinals (6-2) will return to action on Feb. 9 when they hit the road to face Oregon.
"I am so proud of this team," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Dartmouth beat us solidly last season and returned all their top players from a team that was ranked as high as No. 14 in the nation. They are also the defending champions of the prestigious Ivy League Conference."
Â
The Big Green (3-2) took an early lead with doubles wins on courts 2 and 3. Dartmouth gained an early edge at the No. 3 spot where Dan Martin and Pierce Widdecombe defeated Louisville senior Federico Gomez and freshman Sergio Hernandez Ramirez. On court two, Peter Conklin and Casey Ross downed the Cardinals' senior Brandon Lancaster and freshman Alex Wesbrooks 6-3 to seal the point.
Â
In singles action, Dartmouth added its lead when No. 27-ranked Charlie Broom defeated Lancaster 6-2, 6-3. The Cards countered with Gomez's 6-3, 6-4 win over Ross at No. 5. Senior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff beat Martin 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 2 spot to even the score at 2-2. Hernandez Ramirez topped Conklin 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4 to put Louisville on top 3-2. The match was decided on court six where freshman David Mizrahi outlasted Sid Chari 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Â
"Chris is improving since being out for nearly six months with an injury," said Ecarma. "Sergio who joined our team a few weeks ago put us ahead for the first time 3-2 with a gritty win at No. 4 singles. He is thriving in the pressure of the team season. He loves the intensity. With David and Fabien tied at 3-3 in the third sets in their respective courts, the atmosphere was electric. I felt confident because both of those guys are great fighters. But David clinched first 6-4 in the third set. He is from Brooklyn and enjoyed playing in his home region. It was a war today but the 'Fight Squad' prevailed."
