Cardinals Fall 6-1 to Oregon
February 09, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Federico Gomez picked up a singles victory for the Cards.
Eugene, Ore. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Oregon on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Cards drop to 6-3 on the season, while the Ducks improve to 8-1.
"Oregon played very well today," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We started off well. Alex and Fede won at No. 3 doubles against their No. 1 and No. 2 singles players. Chris and Fabien had two match points to clinch it for us at No. 1 doubles, but lost a close match. Fede did a great job coming back and dominating the third set to win at No. 4, but we lost three setters at No. 2 and No. 6. We will learn from today and play better at Boston College on Friday."
Federico Gomez and Alex Wesbrooks gave the Cards the initial advantage in doubles with a 6-3 win on court three over Emmanuel Coste and Thomas Laurent. Oregon countered on court two as Joshua Charlton and Ty Gentry defeated Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley 6-4.
Oregon ultimately gained the 1-0 lead as Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Fabien Salle dropped a hard-fought 7-5 decision to No. 42 Charles Roberts and Armando Soemamo at No. 1.
The Ducks extended their lead to 2-0 in singles as No. 3 Laurent downed Lancaster 6-2, 6-1 at the one-spot. Charlton also added a victory for Oregon on court five, topping Sergio Hernandez Ramirez 6-1, 6-4 to push the lead to 3-0. Roberts then clinched the win for Oregon with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over David Mizrahi.
In other singles action, Salle fell to Gentry 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at No. 3 to push Oregon's lead to 5-0. On court four, Gomez was able to put the Cards on the board with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Riki Oshima.
Oregon's No. 80 Coste captured the final match of the day, triumphing over Morin-Kougoucheff in a tightly contested 7-6 (12-10), 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) decision to seal the 6-1 win for the Ducks.
Up next, the Cardinals head to Boston College on Friday at 5 p.m. for their second ACC matchup of the season.
