Freshman Sergio Hernandez Ramirez sesals the win at No. 5 singles
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Boston College 5-2 in an ACC matchup Friday evening at BC's Rec Plex. The Cardinals (7-3, 1-1) will return to action this Sunday, when they play host to Purdue and Austin Peay at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively.
Â
"This is a unique place to play and Boston College came out firing and playing with no fear. I commend them for the fight they showed tonight. They are one of the most improved teams in the country," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "It's always nice to get a road win in the ACC."
Â
The Cardinals took the doubles point to start to match with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The duo of senior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and freshman Fabien Salle defeated Derek Austin and Sean Mullins 6-3 on court one. Seniors Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley sealed the point at the two-spot where they beat Max Palmer and Chris Grasel 7-5.
Â
In singles action, Salle defeated Grasel 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Eagles countered on court one where Austin topped Morin-Kougoucheff 7-5, 6-3 to make the score 2-1
Â
Senior Federico Gomez pushed Louisville's lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win over Max Mendelsohn at the No. 4 spot.
Â
Boston College answered again, this time on court four, where Markus Nordby beat Lancaster 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, bringing the match score to 3-2.
Â
The match was decided at the No. 5 spot, where freshman Sergio Hernandez Ramirez posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Connor Mullins. Â
Â
Freshman David Mizrahi wrapped up the match with a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 victory over Wills Tutecky at No. 6.
Â
"Federico Gomez did a great job in winning our third point tonight to set up Sergio for the clinch," said Ecarma. "Fabien put us up 2-0 before we lost at No. 1 singles. Fede played a smart tie-breaker for our third point, but BC would not go away and won at No. 2. Sergio played very efficiently and sealed our win. David came back from 3-7 down to win 10-8 in the third set super breaker."
