Cardinals Defeat Purdue 4-1
February 17, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Sergio Hernandez Ramirez clinched the victory for the Cards.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After three straight matches on the road, the University of Louisville men's tennis team returned to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in victorious fashion, topping Purdue 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-3 on the season.
"We've been fortunate to beat Purdue the last three times, but every one of those times have been like this," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "A couple of things go their way and they win. We were blessed and fortunate that things broke our way. I think that this year was key because I'm starting three freshmen in singles and two freshmen in doubles, and they really proved their worth today."
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick lead in doubles, taking control early on each court. Federico Gomez and Alex Wesbrooks captured the first victory on court three, defeating Athell Bennett and Franz Luna 6-3. Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley then clinched the doubles point for Louisville with a 6-3 win over Stephan Koenigsfest and Mateo Julio at No. 2.
With the doubles point in hand, Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Fabien Salle were winning 5-2 over Maksymilian Rapuk and Dominik Sochurek on court one before the match was ended.
The Boilermakers countered in singles as Koenigsfest topped Salle 6-3, 6-2 on court three to even the score at 1-1. However, Louisville quickly regained the lead with two quick wins on courts two and five. Lancaster downed Julio 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, while Gomez triumphed over Sochurek 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
With the three remaining matches coming down to the wire, Sergio Hernandez Ramirez ultimately clinched the 4-1 victory for the Cardinals on court four in a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) decision over Rapuk.
Courts one and six were in the midst of tough battles when the match was decided. Morin-Kougoucheff was tied 5-5 in the third set with No. 108 Bennett at No. 1 after splitting the first two sets 6-3, 3-6. At the six-spot, David Mizrahi was also knotted 5-5 with Santiago Galan after splitting the first two sets 1-6, 6-2.
The Cards will be back in action at 6 p.m. for the second match of Sunday's doubleheader against Austin Peay.
