The Cards end the season with a 10-8-2 record
WASHINGTON - The postseason run for the University of Louisville men's soccer team came to an end Sunday afternoon, December 1, as the Cardinals fell at No. 2 ranked and 3rd-seeded Georgetown 5-1.
Â
UofL concluded its first season under head coach John Michael Hayden with a 10-8-2 record. Hayden is the first Louisville head coach to lead the Cardinals to a pair of NCAA wins in their first season. The Cards qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and have now made the NCAA Tournament 12 of the last 13 seasons. The Cardinals advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years and the seventh time in the last 10 seasons.
Â
Georgetown jumped on top early with a goal in the second minute before adding another in the 26th minute.
Â
Louisville got on the scoreboard less than three minutes later. In the 29th minute, Carlos Sanchis popped the ball over the Hoya defense and found Pedro Fonseca wide open. Fonseca's first shot hit the post, but he was able to gather the rebound and put it home for his second goal of the NCAA Tournament. The goal by Fonseca cut the deficit to 2-1 going into halftime.
Â
The Hoyas scored a quick goal at the start of the second half less than five minutes in. Less than a minute later the Cardinals had their first chance of the second half, but the shot by Cherif Dieye was turned away by the Hoyas' keeper.
Â
Georgetown scored two goals in the 82nd minute that came 21 seconds apart to cement the game.
Â
On the afternoon, the Hoyas out-shot the Cards 18-11 and 10-4 on goal. Jake Gelnovatch made five saves between the posts for Louisville.
