Cardinals Weather Hurricanes In 3-0 Sweep

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --Â Outside hitter Claire Chaussee had 13 kills and 11 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of ACC foe Miami Sunday afternoon at the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

UofL improves to 19-8 and 12-5 in the league. The Cards hit .306 with 10 blocks, three aces and 37 digs. Amber Stivrins and Aiko Jones each had nine kills with Jones adding an ace and two blocks. Anna Stevenson led with five blocks and added seven kills. Setter Tori Dilfer ran the offense and notched 39 assists. The Cardinals saluted Melanie McHenry in her last appearance as UofL's lone senior. Miami drops to 10-14, 6-10 with the Canes hitting .204 with one ace and five blocks.

The Cards used .344 hitting to keep Miami playing catch-up ball most of the first set. UofL moved out to a 14-7 lead early after a kill by Anna Stevenson. The Canes closed the gap to four at 19-15 on a kill by Madison Dill. After a kill by Amaya Tillman moved the Cards to 21-15, Miami called time out. The break did not help their cause as the Cards rolled to a 25-19 win after a solo block by Anna Stevenson supplied the set winner.

In the second set, Miami grabbed the lead early but the Cards tied at 11 on a kill by Aiko Jones. While the Cards never trailed again, the Canes were never further than two points away. Leading 20-18, UofL scored on three straight Miami errors and the Canes called timeout. UofL had set point at 24-19 but UM staved off the loss for two points until a service error gave the Cards a 25-21 win and a 2-0 set lead going into the break.

Miami seemed to have grabbed the momentum in the third set until the Cards tied at 13 after a kill by Amber Stivrins. UofL made a 9-2 run to go up 20-16. Miami managed three more points but two consecutive kills and an ace all by Aiko Jones for the 25-21 win.

The Cardinals travel to Pittsburgh this Wednesday for a matchup with league-leading No. 2 ranked Pittsburgh at 6 p.m.
