Syracuse is Coming In HotÂ
Syracuse volleyball will enter L&N Federal Credit Union Arena on a hot streak. The Orange (10-11, 7-7 ACC) powered its way to a three-set victory over Virginia Tech at home on Sunday to win their fifth straight ACC match. The Orange recorded a season high .427 hitting percentage en route to the victory with Ella Saada notching a season-high three service aces.Â
On Saturday sophomore captain Polina Shemanova continued her stellar play as Syracuse volleyball (9-11, 6-7 ACC) took down Boston College in five sets on Wednesday night in Chestnut Hill. Shemanova posted 32 kills, good for second most in her career, after setting a school record with 36 kills over Louisville.
Â
The Eagles led 2-1 after three sets and the Orange took the fourth, 25-20, to extend the match to a deciding fifth set. 'Cuse dominated the final frame, 15-8 for the win.
Syracuse has one of the most formidable offensive weapons in the ACC on its roster in Shemanova, who was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) volleyball Player of the Week for the third week in a row. The St. Petersburg, Russia native continued her dominant play this past weekend, helping extend the Orange winning streak to five with wins over Boston College and Virginia Tech. This is the first time a player has earned three straight ACC Player of the Week honors since Florida State's Nicole Walch did it in 2015.
Shemanova recorded 32 kills, 14 digs, three service aces and three blocks in a 3-2 victory at Boston College Wednesday night. Her 32 kills were good for third-most in program history. She followed that with a squad-leading 17 kills Sunday. Shemanova ended the weekend with 49 kills, 21 digs, four service aces and five blocks in eight sets.
In addition, Shemanova continues to pace the conference in kills (408), kills per set (5.16), points (462.0), points per set (5.85) and attacks per set (11.76). She currently ranks fifth in the nation in kills per set and fourth in points per set. The captain leads the Syracuse squad with 29 service aces and 220 digs.
McHenry Sidelined for Remainder of 2019
University of Louisville outside hitter Melanie McHenry will be sidelined for the remainder of the season after suffering an injury to her left knee during the match at Notre Dame on Oct. 16, 2019. She had surgery on Nov. 12.Â
McHenry, a four-year starter, is the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 204 kills, leads the team in aces and adds 31 blocks. She is second on the team in digs with 144. Â The lone senior on the 2019 roster, the Speedway, Ind. native ranks No. 9 in school history in kills with 1,345 and is 21st on the active career list in Division I players. This season, she was named ACC Player of the Week, the Fleur De Lis Tournament MVP, and was named to the All-ACC Preseason Squad. Â
Chaussee/Jones Stepping Up
Claire Chaussee stepped into Melanie McHenry's shoes after the knee injury. In the past seven matches, she has averaged 11.25 kills per match. The prior seven matches before that she averaged four kills per match. Jones has 15 matches in double digits including a career-high 20 kills against Miami.Â
Â
RPI Run Down
The Cardinals' RPI is 29, the second best in the ACC behind Pitt (3). RPI stands for Ratings Percentage Index and the index comprises a team's winning percentage (25%), its opponents' winning percentage (50%), and the winning percentage of those opponents' opponents (25%). The opponents' winning percentage and the winning percentage of those opponents' opponents both comprise the strength of schedule (SOS). Thus, the SOS accounts for 75% of the RPI calculation and is 2/3 its opponents' winning percentage and 1/3 its opponents' opponents' winning percentages.
