October 04, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals arrived in the Dominican Republic and hosted a kids clinic on the first day of their international trip.
JUAN DOLIO, Dominican Republic – The University of Louisville baseball team kicked off its five-day trip in the Dominican Republic on Friday evening with a clinic for more than 130 kids.
The Cardinals departed Louisville early Friday morning, connecting in Atlanta before ultimately arriving in the Dominican Republic shortly after 1 p.m., ET.
After touching down in the capital city of Santo Domingo, the Cardinals made the short commute to Juan Dolio to check into their hotel before heading to the field. Youth baseball players ranging from ages 8 to 18 were awaiting Louisville's arrival at a nearby diamond.
The clinic covered 90 minutes and featured specific stations focusing on hitting, pitching, catching, infield defense and outfield defense.
Day two of Louisville's trip will feature the first competition for the Cardinals. UofL will take on Orientales at the 8,000-seat Estadio Tetelo Vargas in San Pedro de Macorís. The Estrellas Orientales franchise is the reigning champion of the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) and managed by former MLB player Fernando Tatis. Estrellas Orientales defeated the Cardinals 5-3 during the Cardinals' trip to the Dominican Republic in 2015.
Prior to the game, the Cardinals will spend the morning at a local orphanage as they continue the community service portion of their visit.
