Senior caps Louisville career sixth in school history with 26 goals, including five in 2018
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior Tate Schmitt has signed a Major League Soccer homegrown contract with Real Salt Lake, the club announced Thursday. Schmitt, who completed his four-year collegiate career with the Cardinals in November, will join RSL's roster for the 2019 season.
"I'm very excited to have signed my first professional contract with Real Salt Lake and it's a very proud moment for myself and my family," Schmitt said in a news release from the club. "I'm very fortunate that I came into the RSL organization as a 16-year-old and developed the foundation to learn and grow as a young player at a high level. To be able to build relationships with some of the guys currently playing with RSL at the Academy really inspired me and motivated me to reach the professional game."
Schmitt was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Second Team, United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team, All-ACC First Team and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team while scoring five goals and adding eight assists in 19 matches during his final collegiate season. He was selected as the ACC Championship Tournament MVP after leading Cardinals to their first ACC title. Schmitt ranks fourth in school history in career points with 69 and sixth in career goals with 26. He totaled 11 game-winning goals in four seasons with the Cardinals, including four in the NCAA Championship.
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Schmitt played his final two prep seasons with the Real Salt Lake Academy (AZ) where he helped RSL to U-17/18 national runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2015. Schmitt and Real Salt Lake will open the 2019 MLS regular season on March 2 on the road against the Houston Dynamo before returning for the home opener on March 9 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Louisville ended its season with an 11-5-3 record overall and ranked 16th in the final United Soccer Coaches poll following a second round loss to Michigan State in the 2018 NCAA Championship. The 2018 season was a successful one for the Cardinals, who earned the program's first ACC Championship title with victories over Notre Dame, Wake Forest and North Carolina in a span of eight days.
