Cards sweep season opening doubleheader
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team defeated Miami University 6-1 Sunday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It was a very tight match. There was a stretch that made me think we were not going to win so for us to pull it out and win 6-1 really impressed me," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. " This team was showing some fight."
The Cardinals opened the match with a sweep of the doubles matchups. Raven Neely and Sena Suswam beat Jordan Ortega-Mendez 6-1 at No. 1, while Aleksandra Mally and Diana Wong defeated Emily Struble and Melati Devi 6-4 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Chloe Hamlin and Nikolina Jovic emerged victorious over Milana Lysova and Priyana Kalita 7-5 at No. 2 to finish the sweep of doubles.
Chloe Hamlin wasted no time in overtaking Makenzie Myers, winning straight sets 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6. Raven Neely followed suit, defeating Milana Lysova 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Sena Suswam battled to take the win over Jordan Ortega-Mendez at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4 and clinch the match for the Cardinals.
Rounding out the wins for Louisville, Nikolina Jovic defeated Emily Struble 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3 while Diana Wong fought to the last game in earning the win over Priyana Kalita 6-4, 4-6 (11-9). At No. 1, Aleksandra Mally fell to Brindtha Ramasamy 6-4, 6-3 for the Miami point.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday as they take on Ball State at 11 a.m. and Northern Kentucky at 5 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
