The Cards will face five top-10 finishers from the 2018 NCAA Championships.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On the heels of the most successful season in program history, head coach Arthur Albiero has announced the 2018-19 schedule for the University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams. The Cards are slated to compete against multiple national powerhouses throughout the course of the season, including five programs that finished in the top-10 at last year's NCAA Championships.
Last season, the Louisville women made history with a record fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Cards return all 12 members of their NCAA squad, including NCAA champion Mallory Comerford, and will welcome 10 talented freshmen.
The Louisville men tied their best showing in program history last year, finishing ninth at NCAAs. Zach Harting, who earned a bronze medal for Team USA at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, leads the six returners from last year's NCAA team. The Cards also add 12 accomplished newcomers.
The Cardinals open the season against Xavier on Oct. 6 at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Musketeers men and women each turned in a fourth place overall finish at the 2018 BIG EAST Championships.
On Oct. 12-13, the Cardinals will split into two units as select members of the women's team will travel to Dallas, Texas for the SMU Classic. The remaining Cards will head north to Columbus, Ohio to take on Texas A&M and Ohio State in a two day tri-meet. The Aggie women captured third at the 2018 NCAA Championships, while the men finished 14th. The Buckeye women also posted a strong showing, finishing 13th overall in the team standings.
Louisville will then head south to Knoxville, Tenn. for a dual meet against Tennessee on Oct. 25. The Volunteer women are coming off a seventh place showing at last year's NCAA Championships, while the men were just outside in 11th.
The Cards return to Ralph Wright Natatorium on Nov. 2-3 for their lone ACC dual meet of the season. Louisville will welcome the Virginia Cavaliers for a two day contest, where the women will face their third top-10 competitor of the season.
Select members of the team will then compete in the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge in West Lafayette, Ind. at Purdue's Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center on Nov. 10-11. Similar to the USA Swimming/College Challenge, all-stars from each conference will compete in a head-to-head format to determine the overall winner. Albiero will serve as the head coach for the ACC women at the meet.
The team will rejoin forces on Nov. 15-17 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Invite. To conclude a busy November, qualifying members of the team will face off against the nation's best at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C on Nov. 29 – Dec. 1. Select members of the USA National Team will also be invited to the 2018 Short Course World Championships in Hangzhou, China, which will be held from Dec. 1-5.
After a month long break from competition, the Cardinals will make the trip to Columbia, Mo. for a dual meet against Missouri on Jan. 10. Two weeks later, Louisville will host Northwestern for their final home dual of the season on Jan. 25, which will also serve as the Cardinals' Senior Day.
The Battle of the Bluegrass takes place just one day later on Jan. 26 as the Cards head to Lexington to take on Kentucky. Louisville will then square off against rival Indiana in Bloomington on Feb. 1 to round out the dual meet season. Both the Hoosier men and women finished in the top-10 at NCAAs with the men taking seventh and the women placing eighth.
On Feb. 16-17, fans will have one final opportunity to see the Cardinals in action before postseason begins at the Louisville Invitational. Just days later, the qualifying members of the women's team will compete at the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C. on Feb. 20-23. The men's meet will also be held in Greensboro on Feb. 27 – March 2.
NCAA action begins on March 14-16 with the NCAA Diving Zones, where divers with zone qualifying scores will head north to West Lafayette, Ind. for the preliminary competition of the NCAA Championships.
The Louisville women will then head to Austin, Texas on March 20-23 for the NCAA Championships, while the men will compete in the same location one week later on March 27-30.
Louisville's season concludes on April 11-13, as the Cards make the trip to Mesa, Ariz. for the annual TYR Pro Swim Series, where they will meet premier swimmers from across the globe throughout the three day long course competition.
