Cardinals Complete First Day of Akron Shootout
September 21, 2018 | Women's Tennis
Louisville collected six wins to open tournament play.
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Louisville women's tennis team opened their fall season slate with victories at the Akron Shootout outdoor tournament. The Cardinals tied the Akron Zips 3-3 in singles and swept the Youngstown State Penguins 3-0 in doubles Friday afternoon.
"Today was a good first day for us," said head coach Mark Beckham. "I always look to see if we can transfer the play from practice to the matches and we did that pretty well today. Our two transfers really stepped up and played well when it counted most for us, so that was really encouraging to see. I am excited to see how Diana and Nina continue to develop and improve with more matches. Overall, a good start to the 2018-19 season."
In singles, the Cardinals' No. 1 Nikolina Jovic defeated Ceci Rosas, 6-3, 6-0, while No. 3 Sena Suswam took down Rita Pedroso 6-1, 6-3. No. 4 Diana Wong rounded out the singles wins for the Cardinals, overtaking Anna Uljanov 3-6, 6-2 (10).
The Cardinals No. 1 doubles duo of Jovic and Suswam overcame the challenge of Imaan Hassim and Anastasia Khokhlova 7-6 (5). No. 2 Aleksandra Mally and Wong demolished Tamara Teufl and Cassandra Moraleia 6-1. No. 3 Dina Chaika and Anna Collins notched the final doubles point for the Cardinals by beating Lucia Zagar and Elvira Esteo 6-3.
